Intros Quiz: 1985 edition

June 7th, 2010 halfhearteddude 3 comments

We continue on our five-yearly cycle of intros quizzes, going on to 1985, with 20 intros to hit songs from 1985,  of 5-7 seconds in length. All were released as singles or had their chart peak that year. There admittedly is a bit of a UK bias here: US readers should not despair at not getting the first track (though it was posted on this blog before). Number 9 was a hit in the UK only early 1986, but in the US in late 1985.

The answers will be posted in the comments section by Thursday — please don’t post your answeers in the comments section, in case it inadvertently spoils the fun for somebody else. And if the pesky number 10 bugs you, e-mail me at halfhearteddude [at) gmail [dot] com for the answers, or  better, message me on Facebook. If you’re not my FB friend, click here.

Intros Quiz: 1980 edition

May 3rd, 2010 halfhearteddude 5 comments

We continue on our five-yearly cycle of intros quizzes with one of my favourite years in music: 1980. Ah, the trinity of Dexys’ Geno, the Pretenders Brass In Pocket (which was released in 1979, I know), and New Musik’s Living By Numbers. None of which feature in this quiz, of course. Fans of the era, especially veteran Smash Hits readers, will love this blog, with completely scanned issues from 1979 and1980, ads and everything. The single reviews are particularly fascinating. The cover on the right is borrowed from the Like Punk Never Happened blog.

So,  here are 20 intros to hit songs from 1980,  of 5-7 seconds in length. All were singles released that year. The answers will be posted in the comments section by Thursday. And if the pesky number 12 bugs you, e-mail me at halfhearteddude [at) gmail [dot] com for the answers, or  better, message me on Facebook. If you’re not my FB friend, click here.

Intros Quiz – 1975 edition

April 5th, 2010 halfhearteddude 2 comments

We continue on our five-yearly cycle of intros quizzes, going on to 1975 — which means that next month we will cover one of my favourite years in music: 1980. The regular reader will recall my recent visit to 1975 here and here (a couple of songs featured in those posts also appear on the quiz).

So, here we have 20 intros to hit songs from 1975,  of 5-7 seconds in length. All were singles either released or charting that year (which means that for British chart fans, at least one 1975 release became a big hit only in early 1976). The answers will be posted in the comments section by Thursday. And if the pesky number 11 bugs you, e-mail me at halfhearteddude [at) gmail [dot] com for the answers, or  better, message me on Facebook. If you’re not my FB friend, click here.

Intros Quiz – 1970 edition

March 2nd, 2010 halfhearteddude 3 comments

We continue on our five-yearly cycle of intros quizzes, going on to 1970. The advanced mathematicians will therefore have deduced that the April installment will deal with the Year of Our Lord 1975.

As always, twenty intros to hit songs from that year of 5-7 seconds in length. All were singles releases that year, all hits or otherwise very well known. The answers will be posted in the comments section by Friday. And if the pesky number 5 bugs you, e-mail me at halfhearteddude [at) gmail [dot] com for the answers, or  better, message me on Facebook. If you’re not my FB friend, click here.

Intros Quiz – UK #1s edition

January 6th, 2010 amdwhah 2 comments

In October, the monthly intros quiz consisted of  US #1s; now it’s British chart-toppers from 1957 to 1988. Not all of them are classics but sufficiently well enough (except number 19, which only people living in Britain in 1986 would know). All songs are in chronological order of reaching the top of the UK charts.

As always, each of the 20 intros is 5-7 seconds in length (OK, one is only four seconds). I will post the answers in the comments section by Monday, so please don’t post your answers. If you can’t wait till then to find out what the blasted number 10 is, please feel free to e-mail me or, better, message me on Facebook. If you’re not my FB friend, click here and become one.

Intros Quiz – X-Mas edition

December 7th, 2009 amdwhah 2 comments

The eagle-eyed reader will have observed, if only by their extraordinary powers of deduction, that soon the feast of the Nativity of Our Lord and Saviour is due to be celebrated, with modesty, discretion and subtlety. To mark the event with the due solemnity, here is a special Christmas edition of the monthly intros quiz.

As always, each of the 20 intros is 5-7 seconds in length — but I had to cheat a little with one song, which kicks off really long after five seconds. I will post the answers in the comments section by Thursday, so please don’t post your answers. If you can’t wait till then to find out what the blasted number 17 is, please feel free to e-mail me or, better, message me on Facebook. If you’re not my FB friend, click here and become one.

Intros Quiz – Girls edition

November 9th, 2009 amdwhah 1 comment

ppgirlsThis month, two quizzes on the subject of girls names for the price of one. The expert edition was compiled by my friend Stuart in Australia. I knew five. I am, of course, rubbish at taking these quizzes (that is why I make them), so for those whose level of intros quiz taking is only just a little above my level, I have put together an edition which I think is easier.

Stuart’s intros are of different lengths; the possibly easier version takes the usual format of 5-7 seconds each. Both quizzes include 20 songs.

I’ll post the answers in the comments section by Thursday. In the interim, if you really need to know the pesky #5 in Stuart’s quiz or the earwormy #12 in mine, e-mail me or pop me a message on Facebook (if you’re not my FB friend, click here and become one).

Intros Quiz – US #1s edition

October 5th, 2009 amdwhah 2 comments

Route 1A simple concept this month: US #1s between 1960 and 1987, not all of them classics but, by dint of having been chart-toppers well known enough. We shall turn to the British #1s in December. But British music fans need not despair: most of these songs were hits across the Atlantic too, a few topped the charts there too. Those that failed to dent the UK Top 20 (such as number 6 and14) are classics in their own right. Only number 10 failed to chart in the UK. All songs are in chronological order of reaching the top of the US charts.

As always, each of the 20 intros is 5-7 seconds in length. I will post the answers in the comments section by Thursday, so please don’t post your answers. If you can’t wait till then to find out what the blasted number 4 is, please feel free to e-mail me or, better, message me on Facebook. If you’re not my FB friend, click here and become one.
