I actually just did a little homework and it turns out that Janis Ian actually started writing "Jesse" when she was 14 (finished it when she was 20) and it's not a breakup song but is rather about an MIA Vietnam vet. I think I may cry even more now ...

Would love to see an anti-war-themed songlist ... not the corny obvious stuff but subtler songs like "Jesse," "Galveston" and "Fields of St. Etienne" by Mary Hopkin. And of course Moxy Fruvous' "Gulf War Song" which is not subtle but still amazing.

I never knew (or really thought about it) that Jesse was Janis Ian's song; I only knew Flack's version.

Never heard of Jeremy the film, I'm afraid. The song title also rings no bell.

Oh, and since you're doing breakups next week ... can I throw in a plug for the song that ALWAYS reduces me to tears even now at age 50? "Jesse" by Janis Ian. I like Roberta Flack's version as well with the thereamin (sp?) but Janis' is just so perfect and spare and heartwrenching.

I do love your inclusion of "Seasons" ... I am not a big fan of Sir Elton these days, but the era of "Friends," "Tumbleweed Connection" etc. was pretty brilliant. Love songs he wrote such as this, "Friends," "Come Down In Time" and "Love Song" remain classic.

I remember my friends and I LOVED "Friends" (the movie) though I am sure now I'd find it trite, cliched, etc. I remember that and the totally forgotten film "Jeremy" as being our two big sobfests ... speaking of which, did the film or the theme song to "Jeremy" (I htink it was called "Blue Balloon") ever make it to Germany? It would have been around the same time (I should look it up) ... pretty sure Robby Benson, who played Jeremy, sang it. Great great schmaltz.

One of the aspects of your blog I appreciate is that instead of reconfirming what we already like, you expose your audience to songs we otherwise might not ever hear.
